Why A 5-Year-Old Subaru Outback Is A Smart Pick Now

With new 2022 Subaru Outback SUVs hard to find, what are the most reliable and fuel-efficient used models? An updated report says the Subaru Outback is still one of the top models. According to an updated Consumer Reports (by subscription) report, the 2017 Subaru Outback still ranks among the best for shoppers this spring.

CR’s top six-best 5-year-old midsize SUV picks

Consumer Reports says the Acura MDX, Lexus RX, Nissan Murano, Subaru Outback, Toyota Highlander, and Toyota 4Runner are the best 2017 midsize SUVs.

CR says, “With the Outback, Subaru split the difference between a wagon and a crossover, creating a winning combination. It’s an intriguing alternative to a traditional midsized SUV, with more cargo space and less thirst for fuel. Functionally, it does everything most midsized SUVs can do except tow a heavy load. With the 2.5i, we measured fuel economy of 24 mpg overall, although this engine won’t win you many races.”

What is the 2017 Outback fuel mileage?

Fuel efficiency is essential for families with gas prices jumping, and the 2017 Outback offers up two engine choices. Consumers can opt for the standard 4-cylinder boxer engine that gets up to 32 mpg or a 3.6-liter model 6-cylinder boxer powerplant producing 256-horsepower, achieving 27 highway mpg.

What is the price of the 2017 Subaru Outback?

The 2017 Outback came in six trim levels; base, Premium, Limited, and Touring with a 2.5-liter engine, and 3.6R Limited and 3.6R Touring with a 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine. CR says the price range is between $19,925 and $28,300, depending on the trim level and condition.

In 2017, the Outback was picked as one of Kelly Blue Book’s “12 Best Family Cars” 2017. There are four reasons why they said: “it’s a standout among family vehicles.” KBB says the Outback wagon’s all-wheel-drive, fuel efficiency, safety technology, and resale value contribute to its impressive credentials.

What are the Outback’s safety scores?

The 2017 Subaru Outback earned the Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. The Outback received five stars from the NHTSA.

Our take

The 2017 Outback appeals to a broader audience because it’s bigger than a traditional wagon, features more cargo capacity, has a higher ground clearance (8.7-inches), and comes standard with Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system for all-weather performance.

The 2017 Outback came with more luxury than ever before. With the 2017 Touring model, consumers could get a rich Java Brown perforated leather-trimmed upholstery and exclusive woodgrain interior finish for the first time. The 2017 Outback also came with a suite of safety features when ordered with Subaru’s Eyesight driver-assist system.

Check out five-year-old models if you can’t find a 2022 Subaru Outback. Consumer Reports says it’s one of the six-best reliable and fuel-efficient midsize SUVs.
