What Does Consumer Reports Think of the New Maserati Grecale Luxury SUV?

The number of recent electric vehicle announcements has us thinking nearly every model coming out will be powered with electricity, but that’s not the case. The new Maserati Grecale luxury SUV is ready to take on some of the toughest competitors in the market. It’s made to fit between the compact and midsize luxury models, it has the power and build to turn some fast laps, and it’s the latest Maserati SUV, giving us a second model to admire.

What is the Maserati Grecale?

When it arrives for 2023, the Grecale will be the latest in the lineup of compact luxury SUVs we want to drive, unless you want a boring vehicle. This small SUV is upscale, powered right, and ready to rocket down the freeway at speeds that just might get you into a bit of trouble. If you’re ready for some fun in a vehicle that’s not as common as the BMWs, Porsches, and Mercedes-Benz models you see, this could be the right SUV for you.

How does our trusted source see this luxury SUV?

Consumer Reports looks forward to driving this new SUV that brings a blend of flash and dash to the small luxury SUV market. The last Maserati they tested was the Ghibli, which was fun to drive but packaged poorly. That was the old regime of FCA; now, Stellantis is in charge, and it seems the new Grecale could be the SUV that brings the desired performance and comfort from this luxury brand.

How much will the Maserati Grecale cost?

We know the price of the base, GT version of this Maserati SUV, but not the top Trofeo model. The GT starts at $63,000, while the middle model, Modena Limited Edition, is only available online and costs $77,400. We will see pricing for the Trofeo model soon; deliveries of this trim begin later in the fall.

Where does the Maserati Grecale get its name?

Maserati habitually uses the names of winds in Italy to name vehicles. The Grecale is no different, with the name coming from the northeasterly Mediterranean wind. This gives us the feeling of a vehicle made to blow past any of the competition it faces swiftly.

How much power does this luxury SUV offer?

The three initial models offer three power levels. The GT and Modena models use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, according to Kelley Blue Book. The GT version returns 296 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The Modena model adds a mild-hybrid system to increase power to 325 horsepower.

If the Trofeo model of the Maserati Grecale is more your speed, you’ll find a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine under the hood. This engine produces 523 horsepower and 457 lb.-ft. of torque for your driving excitement.

Note: an electric version of the Grecale arrives later for the 2024 model year called the Folgore trim.

What features should you find in this Maserati SUV?

Every GT version of the Grecale includes:

Move to the Modena model, and you find:

The Limited Edition of the Modena model adds:

While the Trofeo model gives you:

We should see more features and packages as we come closer to the release date of this luxury SUV.

Which is better, Maserati or BMW?

This is a tough question to answer without much more to go on than the two brands. While BMW certainly has a stranglehold on the performance SUV market, Maserati is making a push to be a brand we look to for fun, excitement, and pleasure in a luxury SUV. Most likely, the choice between these brands is more of a personal preference coupled with the offerings each one brings to the market.
