2022 Honda HR-V vs. 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross Comparison

The 2022 Honda HR-V and the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross represent the latest subcompact SUV showdown between two legendary brands. Here’s how they compare.

2022 Honda HR-V

2022 Honda HR-V Starting Price:$21,420 |Price yoursorView listings near you

Above Average:Exceptionally roomy interior; versatile cargo-carrying capability; good gas mileage; available all-wheel drive.

Below Average:Touchscreen infotainment interface; sluggish acceleration; active-safety features missing on lower trims.

Consensus:With above-average fuel economy and a tempting price, the Honda HR-V is a good value for the buyer on a budget. The CVT transmission is not our favorite, and the HR-V requires lots of engine rpm to climb hills, but overall this Honda is great for hauling passengers and cargo.

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross Starting Price:$22,195 |Price yoursorView listings near you

Above Average:Budget-friendly; many standard active safety features; standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; available all-wheel drive.

Below Average:Only one engine choice; base model is pretty basic; exterior design is unremarkable.

Consensus:The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is aimed at the heart of the hugely popular small-SUV segment, and with its affordable price, solid fuel economy, and strong standard feature set, the new Corolla Cross makes a good argument for your hard-earned money.

HR-V vs. Corolla Cross: Little SUVs, Big Hearts

The HR-V is Honda’s smallest and least expensive SUV. The HR-V is deceptively roomy, particularly its rear seat. Dubbed a Magic Seat by Honda, its multi-folding capability allows for exceptional cargo-carrying versatility, and it’s standard on all four trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, and EX-L.

The sole engine is a 141-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 127 lb-ft of torque that pairs with a CVT (continuously variable transmission). Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard and all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional. The HR-V is not quick, but fuel economy is good: 28/34 mpg city/highway (FWD) and 27/31 mpg (AWD).

Honda’s 7-inch infotainment display is on all but the base LX and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but lacks a tuning knob and menu shortcut buttons. Navigation is not offered. The LX is sparsely equipped; the Sport features unique design elements along with a smattering of additional features.

We recommend the EX or EX-L, which get the HR-V’s bundle of active-safety features that includes forward-collision warning with automatic braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Both trim levels also have heated seats, a sunroof, and Honda’s neat LaneWatch, which displays onto the center screen an image from a rear-facing camera when the right turn signal is activated.

The all-new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is aimed at the heart of the hugely popular small-SUV segment. It joins competing models like the Nissan Rogue Sport, Subaru Crosstrek, Volkswagen Taos, and Kia Seltos.

A couple of big differences include the addition of available all-wheel drive (AWD) and the fact that the Corolla Cross is only offered with what serves as the Corolla lineup’s optional 4-cylinder engine. This 2.0-liter 4-cylinder delivers 169 horsepower to the front wheels, or all four when you add AWD.

Three trim levels are offered: L, LE, and XLE. No matter which you choose, every Corolla Cross comes with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety features. This includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and more.

The 2022 Corolla Cross has a starting price of $22,195 plus an additional $1,215 destination charge.Load up a range-topping all-wheel-drive Corolla Cross XLE with all the bells and whistles and the price tag lands just short of $31,000.

Anyone familiar with the current generation Toyota Corolla will feel right at home in the new Corolla Cross SUV. The dash is a near twin of the Corolla sedan, right down to a choice of 7- or 8-inch infotainment screens, the shape of the heating and air conditioning vents, and the design of the steering wheel.

Available all-wheel drive; passenger space.

Rear-seat room; good reliability history; resale value.

Strong standard safety features; Toyota reliability reputation.

Which One is Right for Me?

The 2022 Honda HR-V is a value proposition, abetted by its strong resale value. It also offers plenty of flexibility thanks to its rear Magic Seat.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is the brand’s latest on subcompact SUVs. It’s more conventional than its sibling the C-HR and has a competitive feature set.
