Subaru shocker: The WRX STI will soon be no more

In a statement, Subaru of America said that it is “exploring opportunities for the next-generation Subaru WRX STI, including electrification. In the meantime, a next generation internal-combustion-engine WRX STI will not be produced based upon the new WRX platform.”

The 2022 WRX should still be pretty sweet, riding on an all-new platform, and with a turbocharged 2.4L boxer engine making 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That engine can be hooked to a CVT, which the automaker is coyly calling a “Subaru Performance Transmission,” but a short-throw, six-speed manual is also available.

As for the STI, “electrification” is a broad term, and could potentially mean a hybrid, or plug-in hybrid, or a vehicle that runs on its battery alone. In its statement, the automaker said it is “focused on how our future sports and performance cars should evolve to meet the needs of the changing marketplace, and the regulations and requirements for greenhouse gases, zero-emission vehicles, and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ).” The STI is rated by Natural Resources Canada at 12.8 L/100 km in combing driving — thirstier than any of the company’s SUVs.
