Reliable Used Pickup Trucks from Ford, Toyota, and Chevy: Consumer Reports

Pickup trucks come in all shapes and sizes these days. Finding a reliable used pickup truck can be like finding a needle in a haystack, but Consumer Reports is here to help. Check out the options below like the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Tacoma.

The 2020 Ford Ranger is one of Consumer Reports’ picks for reliable used pickup trucks

Check it out! The 2020 Ford Ranger is up first on Consumer Reports’ newest list. As a two-year-old reliable used pickup truck, the 2020 Ranger is worth searching for. It scored well on the road test and received an above-average score for its reliability. The owner satisfaction is just average so far. Those same owners reported an overall 22 mpg, but Consumer Reports only made it as far as 20 mpg at the Auto Test Center. Forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking (AEB) are standard. Blind-spot warning (BSW) and rear cross-traffic warning (RCTW) are optional on the base trim but come standard on the other available trim levels.

Price Range:$28,325 – $41,200

Those looking for a reliable used pickup truck have probably come across the 2016 Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma offers reliability and off-road capability in a reasonably priced pickup truck package. Consumer Reports gave the Toyota Tacoma an average score on the road test and the same with the owner satisfaction score. Toyota trucks are in it for the long haul, though the lack of driver assistance and collision intervention features might hold the Tacoma back.

Price Range:$22,325 – $34,850

Owner reported MPG: 20 mpg

The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado can tow 7,000 pounds

Since the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado is a bit newer, it has an advantage over some older pickup trucks. Consumer Reports gave it high marks on the road test and the reliability sector. The owner satisfaction score was a bit below average. Buyers can look for a V6 or diesel four-cylinder engine, both of which can tow 7,000 pounds or more. FCW and lane-departure warning (LDW) are available but not included. No AEB or BSW is available.

Price Range:$25,725 – $46,275

The 2014 Honda Ridgeline is still trucking along eight years later

Even though the 2014 Honda Ridgeline is pretty old, it is still a reliable used pickup truck option. Consumer Reports gave it above-average scores on the road test and the owner satisfaction categories. The reliability score was way above average, though. The Honda Ridgeline isn’t your traditional pickup truck, but that seems better for it anyway. It can tow 5,000 pounds and has a watertight lockable trunk area to store valuables in, too.

Price Range:$19,150 – $24,225

Consumer Reports MPG as tested: 20 mpg

The older you get, the more likely your truck is to have problems. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case with every truck. Toyota and GM are known for making trucks that last well past 200,000 miles. If you need a reliable used pickup truck, check out some of the pickup truck options above.
