No fewer than 21 cars from that total wear either a Hyundai, Kia, or Genesis badge; that’s 11 Korean cars garnering the Top Safety Pick+ trophy, and 10 more the lower tier without the +. Volkswagen is a distant second place with 11 models named — eight of them getting the “Plus” — while Volvo stacks up in third with 10, all of them Top Safety Pick+ choices.

Four minivans qualify for the awards this year, compared with only two last year. This year’s winners are the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica, and Kia Carnival. More impressively — and certainly, more importantly, since they dominate sales — is that four pickups (the Ram 1500 crew cab, Ford F-150 extended cab and crew cab, and the Hyundai Santa Cruz) all made the list. Only the Ram was so endowed last year.
